2nd March Post 2017

After lots of work I have finished my CAS project of creating a blog about my experience having jaw surgery. This surgery has changed the way I look but I am still me. I hope my blog will help others who are going to have surgery or are thinking about having jaw surgery feel prepared and aware of what it involves. I got my surgeon to put it on his website to share with his future patients. Here is a link to my blog: http://annesleighbengtsonsjawsurgery.blogspot.com

First March 2017 Post

This March my soccer team hosted a 3 hour soccer camp for children from 3rd to 5th grade at Sumner elementary. Sumner is a very poor elementary school that is considered "title 1" meaning all the children have free lunch etc. About 10 children showed up and there was about 25 of the girls and boy Grimsley soccer teams combined. We provided snacks and drinks and lead some soccer skills training and fun games like sharks and minos. I think the children had a lot of fun and I think most of the high school students enjoyed interacting with the kids. 3 hours was a long time but I know the parents of the children enjoyed a few hours free of responsibility of their child. The girls soccer team is going to try to make this event  a annual thing. I exemplified the IB character trait of a leader because I was leading everyone in the games and events. I enjoyed making a positive impact on the children.

2nd February 2017 Post

This month I have really gotten to know my Brooks buddy better. Lily is very smart and a lot of fun to talk to. Lately when I have been visiting the class has been reading a book about a boy with some physical disabilities. While I enjoyed reading the book with her and the class it made it more difficult to get to know her because I did not have much time to talk to her. Fortunately, the last time I went they had finished the book and I had the whole time to talk to her. We talked about our dogs. She said her brother got to name her dogs and named them all after food which made her mad because she wanted them to have more human names. She said she was going to get another dog soon and I suggested she make a compromise with her brother so she could name the dog something she wanted. Also, I learned she has a big imagination because she told me about this game she plays with her friends where they have different names and such. I definitely, portrayed the IB characteristic of a good "listener." I am glad I still have a few more month to get to know Lily better.

1st February 2017 Post

This February has been crazy because school soccer has started. I have been spending every afternoon after school at soccer. I have learned so much already because this is the first time I have ever been a true leader of something. I am one of the four captains of the team which means my actions impact the team even more than normal. I have definitely portrayed and been growing my IB characteristic of a leader. As a senior leader too, we have come up with rules for the team about being late and expectations of how to treat each other and act on the team. It will be essential for us (the leaders) to makes sure these rules are implemented to make sure our team has organization and runs smoothly. Also, these rules will enable us to have more fun and be more successful. This past weekend we had the Northwest Jamboree which is a soccer "tournament" where we play shortened games to have some practice playing against other teams. It went really well for Grimsley as we won all our games with some of our "better" players missing. I am really looking forward to this season.

January 25, 2017

This month my church basketball started. My dad is the coach which is nice because he used to coach me when I was young in soccer. This is probably the last time my dad will ever coach a sports team I play for. Church basketball is great because people who play for a club or a school are not allowed to play. This makes it a lot of fun because it is mostly just athletic girls that want to try something new. Our first two games we did not have enough people so we had to forfeit them. We still got to play but it did not count on the record and we had to borrow one of the players younger sisters. The next week we had enough players and the score was really close 32-24. I enjoy playing because it is new experience for me and its fun to be on a team with some girls I do not get to see as much. Hopefully we will continue to grow as a team and have fun during the rest of the season.

Last week Grimsley women's soccer officially began. The seniors lead the first "play around" which is a pre-season practice where anyone is welcome to come scimmage. I was happily surprised because we had 25 players come out. It was harder than I thought it would be to lead because a bunch of talkative high school girls can be difficult to get their attention. Overall everyone was really good though. I showed leadership skills by setting everything up, cleaning up, and giving instruction. Also, I helped people that came that did not know how to do some of the training drills we were doing. I am really looking forward to this spring soccer season because not only do I get a lot of exercise, I will get to be a senior leader. I am hoping to learn a lot about leadership and being a good teammate.
